More Ideas for Baby Scrapbooks

Baby scrapbooks are considered the foundation of scrapping since most scrappers get their start by creating books for their children. However, just because a baby book is your first step into the world of scrapping, you don’t have to settle for elementary layout designs. There are thousands of embellishments, paper and ideas that can easily be incorporated into a baby scrapbook and more are debuting every day. For example, a couple of weeks ago I saw the cutest Dr. Seuss quotes for scrapbooks. The popular children’s book author has a slew of whimsical words of wisdom to add to scrapbooks … Continue reading

Our Children Are Watching Our Choices

What do we teach our children when we watch television together? What do we teach our children when we eat dinner together? What do we teach our children with the types of food we choose to have in our house or by the way we spend our free time? It is important to realize that our children scrutinize our every action. They notice what we eat, what we drink, when we exercise and what we value the most. They know how we spend our time and whether or not we study the scriptures on a regular basis. They know the … Continue reading

Homeschooling Our Gifted Son: The Hunt for “Gifted Curriculum”

I have to first say that it’s not necessary to find curriculum specifically for gifted kids if you have a highly gifted child. But someone recently asked me a question about whether or not you should go deeper or wider when homeschooling a gifted child and what do you do about curriculum. (In other words, do you use ‘regular’ curriculum and just keep advancing grade levels. . .or do you take your time to explore grade level curriculum in depth with lots of investigation.) I think the answer depends on the family and the child, but I’ve offered some thoughts … Continue reading

Are you prepared to say ‘No?’

Sometimes being a good parent means saying ‘no,’ sometimes it means disciplining a child. But as a columnist, Jo Boole, in our local paper pointed out on Friday it seems parents have forgotten how, or are frightened of, saying ‘no.’ As Christians we should realize that saying ‘no’ is part of being a good parent. Look at the example we have of our Heavenly Father. Sometimes God says ‘no’ to us, because what we ask for is not in our best interests. Sometimes God has to draw us aside and discipline us, Hebrews 12:7-11. Should we treat our children any … Continue reading

Teaching our Children to Have a Positive Self-Image

As parents and as members of the church, it is important that we model proper self-image when it comes to our bodies. It is too easy to become caught up in the pursuit of a perfect body. The images that the media flaunts are not healthy, and too easily children and teenagers put themselves down because they are not achieving that look of perfection. Here are five tips on how to promote a positive self-image and a healthy lifestyle for your children. 1) Your example is the most important thing. You should model a healthy lifestyle, as well as have … Continue reading

The Gift of the Scriptures

One of my favorite things about the scriptures is the stories that are in them. I love the way that the stories about people help me in my daily life. As a child I learned the importance of following the Word of Wisdom as I learned the story of Daniel and his friends. I also learned that I could stand up for my beliefs even when it was difficult. I also loved the story of Daniel in the lion’s den and the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Their courage and example helped to develop my strong inner convictions to … Continue reading

Are You Preparing in All Areas of Your Life?

We are commanded to prepare ourselves for upcoming trials and storms. The counsel to prepare our families both temporally and spiritually is pretty strong today. I am sure that you have thought about food storage and financial preparedness. I have also written extensively about spiritual preparedness. It is also important to consider how prepared you are physically to withstand the disasters and stress that may come your way. The Word of Wisdom gives counsel on the proper way to care for your body. We are also counseled to get enough rest and to exercise so that our body stays in … Continue reading

The Word of Wisdom and Your Example to Your Children

When we think about our children and the responsibilities that we have as parents we often focus on how they are doing spiritually, socially and academically. We want our children to be healthy, but often do not stop to think about the habits that we are teaching our children when they are young. The Family: A Proclamation to the World states: “Husband and wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children. ‘Children are an heritage of the Lord’ (Psalms 127:3). Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and … Continue reading
